Year of Study Abroad

By now, no doubt, most people have heard that 2006 is the "Year of Study Abroad" as designated by the US Senate. You can see the banner at the bottom of this page and click on it for more information. As NAFSA points out, "This resolution boosts the visibility of study abroad in the United States and sets the stage for further action on the national level to expand study abroad opportunities. Let us all heed the call to open wide the doors of global understanding through promoting and expanding international educational exchange opportunities."

The resolution by the Senate had three basic components:

  1. It designated 2006 as the "Year of Study Abroad"
  2. It encourages secondary schools, higher education institutions, businesses, and government programs to promote and expand study abroad opportunities.
  3. And finally, it encourages citizens of the US as a whole to support initiatives to promote and expand study abroad opportunities and to celebrate the "Year of Study Abroad" with appropriate ceremonies, programs, and other activities.
We at IIEPassport hope to join you of the international education community in this year of study abroad to help increase access and participation, increase diversity, diversify study abroad destinations, and to support other initiatives of the community as they arise. Please let us know what we can do to support international education activities on your campus.
