Study Abroad in England...

Studying abroad in England will introduce you to a country full of history and culture while also connecting over 13,000 international companies throughout the world. Each year England welcomes an array of international students, more than any nation other than the United States. What those students find in England is a country with modern, energetic cities and rolling, green countryside; exciting business opportunities and marvels of history, culture and art; and a vibrant multicultural society co-existing with time-honored traditions.

England provides an almost limitless choice of opportunities to visiting students. As a student who already speaks the language, you can immerse yourself in a British university and benefit from challenging courses in a system that is set up differently from the US system. A typical university degree in England consists of three years and tends to be far more focused than a liberal arts degree in the US. British classes are often set up with a large lecture combined with labs and practical experiential learning settings or small seminar-based classes designed to foster discussion.

Often classes in English universities will last the entire year rather than just a semester, allowing deep engagement with the materials being studied. Further, students are expected to complete coursework independently as grades are often wholly determined by exams at the end of the year. Since England offers no language barriers, you can study any subject in their high quality educational system, assuring that students of any major should be able to find courses that will contribute to their degree while studying abroad. US citizens entering the UK as students or work permit holders who wish to stay for six months or longer need to apply for entry clearance. There are several forms of financial assistance available to U.S. students. Many universities offer scholarships and bursaries, and U.S. government financial aid can often be applied for study in England. The British Council's website offers a database on funding for study in the UK.

Cosmopolitan London offers incoming students the opportunity to experience a truly multicultural city with people from all over the world working, studying, and living together. Over 58,000 of the 300,000 students in London are international students. The city also offers a host of cultural and historical treasures and you have only to wander through central London to encounter famous places like St. Paul's Cathedral, Covent Garden, the British Museum, and many more world-class offerings. It is one of the best places in the world for students interested in international business to get an internship, for example. Over 13,000 international companies from 92 countries are based in London, which is a major financial capital for the European Union and the world.

Beyond London, England offers many other excellent destinations. You can study in Oxford or Cambridge at the famous universities that have educated Sir Isaac Newton, Lord Byron, J. R. R. Tolkien, Bill Clinton, and many others. Universities in medium and small-sized cities such as Leeds, Birmingham, Nottingham, Manchester, and York provide rewarding experiences as well. They offer a variety of programs, ranging from cutting-edge technology programs at the University of Bristol to one of the UK's most highly acclaimed Art and Design programs at Lancaster University.

Studying in England can also be a good opportunity to explore and understand a nation that has had a profound influence on the modern world. An exploration of England's countryside, from the ancient formations of Stonehenge to Roman cities like Bath, as well as the plethora of Gothic cathedrals and medieval villages, provides insight into the cultural legacy of the Romans, Saxons, Vikings, and other civilizations.

England's multicultural cities and towns are a testament to all the different peoples who have met and mixed there over time. One aspect of this is the prevalence of international cuisine in England, particularly Indian food. Birmingham, for example has more Indian restaurants than some major Indian cities! Few places in the world can boast as international a population, meaning that you can truly develop cross-cultural communication skills while still studying in an English-speaking environment.

England makes a perfect jumping off point for a variety of exciting travel to the rest of the United Kingdom (Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland) and all of Europe. The country is the main base of a number of low-cost airlines that operate budget flights across Europe. Whether you choose to stay in England for your entire study period or use it as a base to explore other countries and cultures, you surely will not go wrong by choosing England as your study abroad destination.
