Dear reader,

On November 12, IIE published their annual Open Doors report on international educational exchange. The research shows that study abroad by U.S. students increased by 8.5% to a total of 223,534.

Once again the UK has topped the list of study abroad destinations. (Check out the information from the British Council below for more.)

Increases reported in Open Doors 2007 reflect a growing interest in non-traditional destinations as well. Asia (up 26 percent), Latin America (up 14 percent), Africa (up 19 percent), and the Middle East (up 31 percent) are becoming more and more popular destinations for students exploring life-changing experiences. This month we highlight one of these non-traditional destinations. Learn more about Turkey below, the country often described as the "Cradle of Civilization."

Cheers,

British Council

The UK remains the top study abroad destination for US students, according to IIE's 2007 Open Doors report - so if you're on the hunt for a program, the campuses of England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland are an excellent place to start. Already slated to ring in 2008 from across the Pond? Some UK study abroad programs require entry clearance. Our Visa FAQs will answer your questions about what to do and where to apply.

Featured Destination of the Month: Turkey

Turkey is the country that unites Europe and Asia, with a reputation as a dominant regional power that has lasted for centuries. A land of many cultures, decorated with impressive historical ruins and monuments of the ages, Turkey has been deemed the "Cradle of Civilization." Turkey's position both geographically and politically makes it a key player in relations between Europe and the Middle East. The country has a strong Muslim influence and is now a modern, urban society.

Turkey has 53 state and 23 private institutions of higher education, and many of them instruct courses in English. The aim of the Turkish educational system is to nurture productive individuals with a national consciousness who will contribute to the prosperity of society. Education is heavily involved in making the Turkish nation a creative and distinguished member of the modern world.

Institutes of higher education in Turkey are governed by the Higher Education Council and are similar to universities in the United States. Turkish universities boast high standards and internationally recognized degrees, and most of the scientific research in the country takes place there. Students who study abroad in Turkey will discover that the educational system is competitive, especially when it comes to gaining entrance to popular departments.
