Dear reader,

Happy New Year!

Hopefully this new year finds you back at school (possibly in a new country) and ready for an exciting semester.

One of our annual projects is fast approaching, our country of the month calendar. If you've studied abroad in any of our featured 08-09 countries (Austria, Ecuador, China, England, Morocco, Italy, Singapore, Peru, Japan, South Africa, Switzerland, or Thailand) (or if you're there now!) we'd love to feature your pictures and stories both in the calendar and on our website. Please email us for more information or just send us your pictures.

We have some great features for you including information about the British Council's Study Abroad Database. We also have our destination of the month feature exploring Tanzania, and our city portal feature, which is growing monthly. We recently posted a piece about Geneva. Finally, another new initiative in 2008 is highlighting an outstanding student who has studied abroad. Our January Student of the Month, Monty McGee, had an inspiring experience in China. If you know an inspiring student who studied abroad please let us know, we'd love to feature them.

We look forward to being your information source for international education in 2008.

Cheers,

Josh
Your IIEPassport General Manager

Featured Destination of the Month: Tanzania

The future is looking bright in Tanzania, a country renowned for its natural beauty and human legacy stretching back millions of years. Located in Eastern Africa and bordering the Indian Ocean between Kenya and Mozambique, Tanzania is comprised of the mainland of Tanganyika and the island archipelago of Zanzibar. Students studying abroad in Tanzania will be intrigued by the cultural and ecological diversity of this country, where the traditions of dozens of ethnic groups blend with an emerging sense of modernity.

The country views higher education as integral to national development, with the goal of producing a skilled workforce and a competitive economy. Higher education in Tanzania continues to develop, with new universities opening and existing institutions increasing their student intake. Tanzanian higher education emphasizes gender equity and much progress has recently been made in this area.

Study Abroad Safety Tips for Female Students

Studying abroad is often associated with excitement, growth, cultural awareness. It is rarely associated with danger.
Negative stories do exist, but most are a direct result of students not taking some of the simplest precautions. In other words - the negative incidents were often highly avoidable. A good way of thinking about study abroad safety is, if you wouldn't do it at home, you shouldn't do it while overseas. Much of remaining safe has to do with trusting your instincts, as well as with projecting a confident and assertive attitude.

Student of the Month - Monty McGee
If you have ever considered studying abroad but don't know where you'd like to travel, let Monty McGee tell you how fascinating it is to study in China. He should know - McGee, a graduating senior majoring in political science at Virginia's Norfolk State University, spent a full academic year studying in China. Through study abroad programs sponsored by the School for International Training (SIT) at the Yunnan Normal University and at the University of International Business and Economics with the Knowledge Exchange Institute (KEI), McGee enjoyed the experience of a lifetime studying in China's Yunnan Province.

Featured City Portal: Geneva
Nestled between the Alps and Jura Mountains in the crossroads of Western Europe, Geneva is the second largest city in Switzerland, after Zurich. It lies in the southwest near the border with France, at the western end of Lake Geneva, where the Rhone flows out of the lake. Its majestic castles, pristine lakes and international organizations draw visitors from around the world, many of whom decide to stay. In fact, more than 35 percent of the city's residents are expatriates, making it very easy for study abroad students to assimilate. The city is extremely cosmopolitan, and English is widely spoken.
