Dear reader,

I hope this month finds you well and possibly heading into some warmer weather. I also hope it finds you with plans to go abroad this summer, or to at least fill out an application or two!

Might you be looking for a little extra money while you study in the UK? Did you know that American students in the UK on full-time courses of study are eligible to work to earn extra money? The British Council can tell you about the nuts and bolts of working during your UK course.

Also, as part of the IIEPassport Student of the Month campaign, we are featuring Lizzie Edwards, who studied as part of an IFSA-Butler program in Argentina. Lizzie, a senior at Skidmore College, parlayed her interest in human rights into two exciting experiences abroad that you will find both interesting and informative. Finally, our March destination of the month feature explores Hong Kong, so check that out as well.

We hope you enjoy.

Cheers,

Josh
Your IIEPassport General Manager

Featured Destination of the Month: Hong Kong

Students who study abroad in Hong Kong will discover a towering city with a sparkling, industrialized natural harbor, representing a dramatic convergence of Chinese, Southeast Asian and Western influences. Hong Kong has grown from a simple fishing village to a cosmopolitan leader in international banking and finance. The area consistently impresses students with its gravity-defying skylines, delicious cuisine and excellent education system.

Hong Kong is located in East Asia and borders the South China Sea and China. It is officially called the "Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) of the People's Republic of China," reflecting its special status, with some legal, monetary and other systems that are separate from the rest of mainland China. The Chinese government calls this the "one country, two systems" policy. Britain ruled and administered the area from 1841 until 1997, before handing sovereignty to China. Hong Kong is now composed of Hong Kong Island, the Kowloon Peninsula, the New Territories and more than 200 other small islands.

A good way of thinking about study abroad safety is, if you wouldn't do it at home, you shouldn't do it while overseas. Much of remaining safe has to do with trusting your instincts, as well as with projecting a confident and assertive attitude.
