Dear reader,

It's warm, it's sunny and there are some amazing things going on here at IIEPassport. I hope the spring is treating you well and that your study abroad plans are well on their way!

This month's Student of the Month, Michael Ernst, is a truly engaging student with a unique set of study abroad experiences. Ernst has traveled abroad with the International Honors Program (IHP) as both a student and a Trustee. Read about his travails and about the difference between a study abroad experience as a student and as a Trustee.

Our Destination of the Month will take you to the Czech Republic, where students can study in sophisticated Prague, a popular study abroad destination. Discover how your students can get the most out of study abroad through a program in the Czech Republic, or perhaps in Beijing, our featured City Portal of the month. And, if you are interested in study abroad programs in Scotland, the British Council has several new scholarships available.

If you've been looking into nontraditional destinations, you will want to look into the Promoting Peace through Dialogue, Middle East 2008 training seminar in international negotiation, mediation and conflict resolution. The seminar and conference will be held from July 20 to August 3 at the United Nations University-International Leadership Institute in Amman, Jordan.

Here's to a pleasurable and productive summer!

Cheers,

Josh
Your IIEPassport General Manager

Featured Destination of the Month: Czech Republic

Located at the heart of Central Europe, the Czech Republic became a separate nation-state when the former Czechoslovakia was peacefully divided into the Czech Republic and Slovakia in 1993, following the "Velvet Revolution" of 1989.

The Czech provinces have been subject to Europe's shifting empires, from the Great Moravian Empire to the Austro-Hungarian Empire, later becoming Czechoslovakia and finally gaining a separate identity as a republic, under the leadership of famous dissident and playwright Vaclav Havel, who served as its first president. Throughout these political transitions, it has retained its status as a European cultural center. Today it is one of the most prosperous and developed of the formerly Communist countries. Its economy continues to experience dynamic growth, due to increased exports, foreign investors and an entrepreneurial business environmnent.

Students Experience Culture Shock In Reverse After Returning Home

By Lynn Ngo, The Lariat Online, Baylor University

Each semester many students who studied abroad return home with reverse culture shock.

Reverse culture shock can be compared to the culture shock that one may experience as a foreigner in another country. Except this time the culture shock applies to one's home country.

Reverse culture shock can affect anyone who has lived for an extended period of time in another culture and has adapted to that cultural environment, such as study abroad students.

Student of the Month - Michael Ernst
Michael Ernst knows his way around the world pretty well these days, thanks to his participation in the "Cities in the 21st Century" program, offered through the International Honors Program (IHP). He studied abroad through the program as a student, and continued his exploration of foreign countries by becoming a trustee fellow with the program.

Featured City Portal: Beijing
Traditional hutong dwellings dwarfed by soaring residential towers; ancient acupuncture practiced alongside sprawling shopping complexes: this is 21st century Beijing, and it couldn't be a better time to study abroad there. China's new elite makes its home in the city alongside legions of political functionaries, and buzz is building as Beijing becomes more widely known as a global city. At the nexus of the ancient and modern, the political and cultural, Beijing is an ideal venue for an educational experience unlike any other.
