Dear reader,
Now that the summer is coming to a close, it's back to school and back to work - whether we're ready or not! IIEPassport has some exciting things going on this month to get you feeling enthusiastic about the academic year ahead.
Our featured Destination of the Month, China, is very timely this month considering that the Beijing Olympics had us glued to our televisions this summer. Another of our features this month is on the cutting edge of current events as well - for students interested in joining the environmental movement, you can now search our site for "Green" postgraduate study abroad courses in the UK.
Also, check out our featured City Portal this month, the culturally rich city of Beijing.
I hope you have enjoyed your summer and wish you a smooth transition into the school year!
Cheers,
Josh

As the world's most populous country and oldest continuous civilization, China will always be associated with its ancient traditions and revered treasures, such as the Great Wall stretching across China's ancient frontier and the Terra Cotta Warriors that stand guard in Xi'an. Yet in recent years, as China has become an economic powerhouse and political heavyweight, Americans are increasingly interested in China's future. With this meteoric rise come new environmental, social and political challenges as China strives to integrate sweeping economic change with its ancient traditions and socialist political legacy. Study abroad students of all academic levels and fields of interest are drawn to this dynamic country.
Education has played a major role in China's cultural history and economic development. The Cultural Revolution disrupted China's educational programs for nearly a decade, but following Mao Zedong's death in 1976, the government began a review of these policies. In response, Deng Xiaoping launched the "Four Modernizations," which recognized that higher levels of training were necessary for the advancement of science and technology, agriculture, industry and national defense.

Student of the Month - Autumn Zellers
Many students believe that if they want to study abroad, they have a couple of choices - opt for a program offered through their school or find a program through another agency. And, many students believe they must study abroad within a specific window of time. Then there are students such as Penn State University's Autumn Zellers who do not allow the typical constraints to limit the chance to study abroad.
Zellers was all but finished with being an undergraduate student at the Penn State Abington campus when she decided to follow her passion and study abroad in Morocco. To make it happen, she went through the painstaking process of designing her own independent study project, from narrowing the research topic to enduring the often difficult approval process.
With the help of her favorite professor and a great deal of determination, Zellers saw the plans for her independent study abroad project come to fruition. She decided to devote her research to the observation of nonverbal communicative interactions that take place in the "souqs," or marketplaces of Marrakesh and Essaouira.
Featured City Portal: Beijing
Traditional hutong dwellings dwarfed by soaring residential towers; ancient acupuncture practiced alongside sprawling shopping complexes: this is 21st century Beijing, and it couldn't be a better time to study abroad there. China's new elite makes its home in the city alongside legions of political functionaries, and buzz is building as Beijing becomes more widely known as a global city. At the nexus of the ancient and modern, the political and cultural, Beijing is an ideal venue for an educational experience unlike any other.
