Dear reader,
I hope your fall semester is shaping up to be as exciting as ours!
In this October issue, the British Council is proud to introduce the UK's Skillset Screen Academy Network - a prestigious group of media arts schools dedicated to educating students for the film industry.
For a unique service-learning experience, look no further than St. John University's "Discover the World Program" - a one semester, full credit program where students have the opportunity to study in three different European countries!
We also take you to the enchanting destination of Morocco. At the intersection of European, Arab and African culture, this fascinating country offers unparalleled study abroad opportunities. And, for further inspiration, our featured City Portal is Sicily - one of the world's first multicultural societies.
Please share these wonderful opportunities with your friends and classmates. And be sure to let us know if there's any destination or topic you'd like us to cover.
Cheers,
Josh

British Council: Setting the Scene for British Film and Arts
From 80s punk to the original "The Office" to award-winning actors, directors and writers, the UK's creative talents are known around the world. The UK's Skillset Screen Academy Network is leading the way in educating students for the film industry. Whether it's the Bournemouth Screen Academy at the Arts Institute of Bournemouth or the Screen Academy at London College of Communication/University of the Arts London and Ealing Institute of Media/EHWLC to the Film School at the University of Wales, students attending classes gain a UK perspective on film. The screen academies in the network were selected through a rigorous assessment process based on criteria developed with direct involvement from key players within all areas of the film industry. To learn more about the different schools within the network, visit www.skillset.org/academies. And, if you'd like to learn about even more film course options in the UK, visit http://www.britishcouncil.org/usa-educationuk.htm and enter "film" as a keyword in the search for a course box.
St. John's University
Spend an exciting semester living and studying in three different countries! With St. John's Discover the World program, you will spend five weeks each in Rome and Paris, then choose from five weeks in either Salamanca or Dublin. Or spend a full semester at our Rome campus immersed in the life of the "Eternal City." Either program offers dynamic service learning opportunities along with 12-18 credits over the academic semester, with courses that are culturally rich, academically challenging, and inspire an appreciation for European culture.
Featured Destination of the Month: Morocco
Featured Sponsor: Amideast
Morocco, whose full Arabic name translates to "The Western Kingdom," is an exciting and accessible study abroad destination. Among the bustling souks, fertile valleys, sun-soaked beaches and snow-capped mountains, students will discover a warm and welcoming society functioning at the intersection of Arab, European and African culture.
Ruled at one time or another by the Berbers, Romans, Byzantine Greeks, Arabs, Portuguese, Spanish and French, Morocco has formed its identity through centuries of interaction with the outside world. Situated in the northwest corner of Africa, Morocco marks the point where the Mediterranean and Atlantic Oceans meet. Morocco is the only African country that is not currently a member of the African Union, and is instead a member of the Arab League. Though Arabic is the official language, French and Berber are also widely spoken.

Featured City Portal: Sicily
Sicily, one of the world's first multicultural societies, has been ruled by Asians, Africans and Europeans over the course of its 3,000-year history, and each group has clearly left its mark. Just three kilometers from the Italian peninsula, across the Strait of Messina, Sicily is located at the center of the Mediterranean. Brimming with art, history, archaeology and folklore, Sicily draws thousands of students to its shores each year.
Students in Sicily will tread the same ground as many of those who shaped the destiny of Europe. Phoenicians, Carthaginians and Aragonese are just a few of the early peoples who claimed Sicily as their own. Once a Greek colony, a Roman province, an Arab emirate and a Norman kingdom, Sicily holds many reminders of its cosmopolitan past. Greek temples and amphitheaters, Roman settlements, Norman-Arab, Byzantine and early Gothic churches, medieval castles and Baroque mansions overwhelm the senses.
