Dear reader,

Welcome to the December issue of the IIEPassport Newsletter. We have a lot of great information to share with you this month, particularly if you're destined for study in Europe or Asia.

St John University's three-country "Discover the World Program" is a great program for that authentic European experience. Spend five weeks each in Rome and Paris, and choose a third city from either Salamanca or Dublin. Dublin, a modern, energetic city with excellent universities, is also this month's City Portal.

Our featured destination of the month is Singapore. Cosmopolitan and multicultural, its rich fusion of peoples and traditions promises students a memorable study abroad experience!

As always, we have lots of helpful information and advice for you at StudyAbroadFunding.org, our Adviser Center, and our Student Center. As we come to the end of our fall semester, I would like to wish you and yours a peaceful holiday season, and a happy, healthy and prosperous New Year!

Cheers,

Josh

St. John's University

Spend an exciting semester living and studying in three different countries! With St. John's Discover the World program, you will spend five weeks each in Rome and Paris, then choose from five weeks in either Salamanca or Dublin. Or spend a full semester at our Rome campus immersed in the life of the "Eternal City." Either program offers dynamic service learning opportunities along with 12-18 credits over the academic semester, with courses that are culturally rich, academically challenging, and inspire an appreciation for European culture.

Featured Destination of the Month: Singapore

Located on the southern tip of the Malay Peninsula, Singapore is the smallest nation in Southeast Asia. Consisting of one main island and 60-plus smaller islands and islets, Singapore is populated by people of Chinese, Malay, Indian and European descent. Each group has added its own art, architecture and culinary traditions to the overall culture of Singapore, creating a fascinating backdrop for students in search of a memorable study abroad experience.

According to Malay tradition, Singapore was originally named Singapura by a Sumatran prince after he encountered a strange animal that he took to be a lion. This was considered to be good luck, and thus, "Singapura" (which means "City of the Lion") was founded. Once the hub of British power in Southeast Asia, Singapore was occupied by the Japanese during World War II, but reverted to British rule after the war. Eighteen years later, Singapore achieved independence and merged with Malaya, Sabah and Sarawak to form Malaysia. On August 9, 1965, Singapore was separated from Malaysia, becoming an independent republic, and the new country joined the United Nations on September 21 of that same year.

Featured City Portal: Dublin
Dublin is one of those cities that lands on almost everyone's must-see travel lists. In fact, the BBC conducted a Europe-wide survey in which Ireland was voted the most content country in Europe, and Dublin itself was recognized as the best European capital in which to live. Further, more than four million people visit Dublin a year, making it the third most-visited capital city on the continent. Rich with history, culture and world-class education, Dublin makes an ideal study abroad destination.

Those interested in European history will find a fascinating story to unravel in Dublin. The earliest reference to the city dates back to A.D. 140, when Greek astronomer Ptolemy mentioned a settlement called Eblana Civitas. It was in the 1st Century B.C. that the term Dubh Linn was used, and while the words mean "black pool" in Irish, the area saw settlements by the Normans, the Scandinavians and the Vikings, so the definitive origin of the name is unknown.
