Dear reader,

Welcome to the September 2009 issue of the IIEPassport Newsletter. As many of you prepare to study abroad, you no doubt have a few questions or concerns. Why not let the IIEPassport team help you out? Whether you're a student, adviser or parent, our Adviser Center, the Student Center, and our Student Guide for Study Abroad will have all you need to know.

Brought to you by New York University, our featured Destination of the Month is the tantalizing country of Argentina. Boasting spectacular scenery, a thriving cosmopolitan scene, world class educational institutions, and the highest literacy rate in all of South America, it is no wonder that Argentina attracts thousands of students each year. Sponsored by CEA-Cultural Experiences Abroad, our featured city is Argentina's capital, Buenos Aires, the country's most important port and its cultural, educational, government and business center. Nearly one-third of Argentina's population lives in this bustling, dynamic metropolis which is often referred to as the "Paris of South America."

For those of you heading to Europe, be sure to visit St. John's University's "Discover the World" program, our Germany portal, and our Hot Study Abroad Programs. At the IIEPassport.org search engine, you'll find information on programs that take place anywhere in the world!

Please feel free to share the IIEPassport Newsletter with your friends and colleagues. And, if you don't find what you're looking for here, please let us know. Our aim is to help you make the most out of your study abroad experience!

Best wishes to all in the upcoming academic year,

Josh

St. John's University

Spend an exciting semester living and studying in three different countries! With St. John's Discover the World program, you will spend five weeks each in Rome and Paris, then choose from five weeks in either Salamanca or Dublin. Or spend a full semester at our Rome campus immersed in the life of the "Eternal City." Either program offers dynamic service learning opportunities along with 12-18 credits over the academic semester, with courses that are culturally rich, academically challenging, and inspire an appreciation for European culture.

Featured Destination of the Month: Argentina

Featured Sponsor: NYU in Buenos Aires

With its diverse landscape, cosmopolitan flair and rhythmic tango, in addition to a strong higher education system, Argentina presents a prime destination for international students. The blend of European and indigenous influences makes the country's culture fascinating to explore. Argentina, the eighth-largest country in the world by land area, comprises most of the southern half of South America, sharing borders with Chile, Uruguay, Brazil, Bolivia and Paraguay.

Argentina is the site of some of the world's tallest mountains, expansive deserts and impressive waterfalls. The landscape ranges from wild, remote areas in southern Patagonia to the bustling metropolis of Buenos Aires on the eastern coast. Argentina has many miles of Southern Atlantic coastline, as well as the fertile plains of the Pampas that serve as the nation's breadbasket. Argentines are mostly descendants of Spanish and Italian immigrants, as well as indigenous groups, many of whom intermixed with the Europeans during the time of the conquistadores.

Buenos Aires, the capital of Argentina, is central not only to the country's political life, but also to its artistic and cultural heritage. Its diverse neighborhoods, friendly people, vibrant nightlife, European heritage and cultural treasures make Buenos Aires an ideal study abroad location.

First founded in 1536 by Pedro de Mendoza, the settlement was later abandoned and permanently established in 1580 by Juan de Garay. The city was federalized in 1880 and is home to the President of the Republic, currently Néstor Kirchner, who resides in the Casa Rosada (Pink House).
